In this 30-minute program hosted by Renaude Grégoire, we meet Ghislaine Patry—trade unionist, feminist, president of the Fédération des femmes du Québec (1973–1977), and former JOC member, as well as a protagonist in the film—along with Marie-Claire Nadeau, a community activist, feminist, and former JOC member, also featured in the film. Both are “privileged witnesses to the history of the JOC.” Through their testimonies, the program recounts how this movement “greatly contributed to improving Quebec society.”

“In three words, the JOC is about empowerment, awareness, and involvement,” summarizes Yvon Lemay, founder of Maison Oxygène and one of the participants in Annie Deniel’s touching documentary, which traces the history of the Catholic Workers’ Youth through numerous photos and archival footage. A movement mocked by the political elite, “JOCism” has helped raise awareness of social injustices among several generations of young men and women. Film screenings and discussions are being held across Quebec, including this Friday at Cinéma Beaubien, with the director in attendance.

Through popular education, the organization served as a springboard for union and community organizing. Union activist and feminist Françoise David and UQAM history professor Catherine Foisy share their perspectives on this film, which sheds light on a little-known chapter of our social history.
