“In three words, the JOC is about empowerment, awareness, and involvement,” summarizes Yvon Lemay, founder of Maison Oxygène and one of the participants in Annie Deniel’s touching documentary, which traces the history of the Catholic Workers’ Youth through numerous photos and archival footage. A movement mocked by the political elite, “JOCism” has helped raise awareness of social injustices among several generations of young men and women. Film screenings and discussions are being held across Quebec, including this Friday at Cinéma Beaubien, with the director in attendance.

Voir. Juger. Agir.»: l’héritage oublié de la Jeunesse ouvrière catholique “Rich in testimonies, as well as in archival photos and footage, the 70-minute documentary, which will be shown in at least a dozen theatres across Quebec starting April 3, portrays a vibrant youth full of life and driven by ideas and projects.”

La JOC : un pan méconnu de l’histoire sociale du Québec : Entrevue avec Catherine Foisy et Françoise David

The documentary See-Judge-Act sheds light on the Youth Catholic Workers (YCW), a movement active in Quebec for nine decades, whose members fought for better working conditions and women’s empowerment. Through popular education, the organization served as a springboard for union and community organizing. Union activist and feminist Françoise David and UQAM history professor Catherine Foisy share their perspectives on this film, which sheds light on a little-known chapter of our social history.

“More than a history lesson, the film is a lesson in commitment, which acts as a remedy against the social decline observable today.”

The film “above all sheds light on a largely forgotten social history: that of a working-class youth who learned to understand the world in order to change it.”

“The JOC was made up of young factory workers, women earning 40 cents an hour, who were becoming literate through the movement,” emphasizes André Vanasse [producer].

“At a time when social movements are seeking to reinvent themselves, See – Judge – Act reminds us of something simple yet fundamental: a society is also transformed from its margins, when young people decide, together, to understand the world in order to change it.”

“In a context where many are wondering how to revive a sense of the common good and solidarity between generations, the history of the YCW—and the film that tells its story—invites us to revisit our own relationship to engagement. See – Judge – Act reminds us that there is no age limit to learning how to turn indignation into action, and that the experiences of young workers from the last century still have much to say to today’s youth and society.”
