Chronicle of a crisis by Simon Larochelle

SYNOPSIS

Against the backdrop of Quebec’s housing crisis, Sarah and Simon, a couple in their thirties, are faced with repossessing their apartment. Faced with this brutal and uncertain situation, they decided to document their daily lives: a journey marked by uncertainty, disappointment and anxiety… but also by acts of resistance and solidarity.

The result is a film of rare intimacy, which bears witness to the growing economic precariousness affecting the generation of millennials, and those who will follow them.

Chronicle of a Crisis is at once a diary, a cry from the heart, and a call to action.

DOCUMENTING REALITY TO DENOUNCE AND MOBILIZE

Since filming, Sarah and Simon’s situation has not stabilized.
Over the past three years, they’ve had to appear seven times before the Administrative Housing Tribunal (TAL), faced three attempts to sell their building, endured abusive legal action, pressure to leave their apartment, and manoeuvres aimed at shortening their lease. Their story echoes that of thousands of other tenants across Quebec.

Through Chronique d’une crise, they offer a powerful testimony on the real-life impacts of real estate speculation and political inaction.

Chronicle of a Crisis follows in the tradition of socially engaged and activist documentary cinema.
The film resonates with the writings of Peter Marcuse and David Madden on housing alienation, reminding us that housing is not a commodity : It is a fundamental right.

It gives voice to those who are too often unheard, and highlights the urgent need for collective action.
